Situated in the coastal Dalmatia, Split is the second-largest city in Croatia. It is located under Marjan, a hill overlooking the city. Its 1700-year-old rich history dates back to ancient times when Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near Salona, another Roman city, where he wished to spend his last years of life. Both Palace and the historical core of Split have been part of UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1979. There are many restaurants, taverns, wine bars and cheese bars where you can enjoy a feast of local dishes. Do you have lots of energy? Visit Bačvice, a famous beach where you can go for a swim or play “picigin”, a 100-year-old ball game, with locals. If you want to pray, visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, city’s patron saint. Fancy a coffee? No problem! Just go to the promenade (Riva) and pick a seat in some of the thrusting cafes and restaurants. This is where all the greatest events in Split are held, like the Split carnival, a celebration dedicated to St. Domnius. And if you're lucky, you could meet one of the many famous athletes, such as handball player Ivano Balic, high jumper Blanka Vlasic, swimmer Durdica Bjedov, basketball players Toni Kukoc and Dino Rada, footballers Aljosa Asanovic and Slaven Bilic, as well as the legend of Croatian tennis Goran Ivanisevic, and many more. Everyone here is famous, and the people are very friendly and easy-going.
